Pokemon Conquest is very different from your average Pokemon game. It is a lot more like a typical RPG than a typical Pokemon game. The first major difference is the fact that you are a warlord, not a Pokemon trainer. You must conquer other kingdoms and build your kingdom. Second, the Pokemon battles are much different than the ones you are used to. In a typical Pokemon game, your Pokemon stands on one side of the field and the opposing Pokemon on the other. You have the option to attack, switch Pokemon, run, or use items. In Pokemon Conquest, you move your Pokemon around the battlefield to get to the opposing Pokemon, then fight, use warrior skills, items, or battlefield features. Another difference is very interesting. This game has the option to input codes, once you defeat your fifth kingdom, to gain access to special Pokemon. The access to these Pokemon is limited to one in-game month. In a typical Pokemon game, you must battle and capture most of your Pokemon.
